Red Ribbon Week event held for drug and alcohol awareness

F.K. White Middle School students held a Red Ribbon Week event Wednesday to raise awareness of drug and alcohol abuse.

During a ceremony, people were invited to place ribbons on a “Tree of Remembrance” — an oak tree on the school’s lawn — in honor of victims and survivors of substance abuse.

Organizers said it was important to show support for those who had overcome such problems. The theme of the event was “YOLO — You Only Live Once.”

“We want to promote a safe and drug-free lifestyle,” said school counselor Melissa Bradberry.

Other Red Ribbon Week activities included a poster contest, days of remembrance, a red shirt day and a “Teaming Up Against Drugs” jersey day.

“F.K. White is building a safe community that brings together young and old in the community to promote a safe atmosphere for students,” said student council sponsor Lorri Caldwell.

She said the school wants to “encourage students to live up to their fullest potential by avoiding the pitfalls of drug and alcohol abuse.”
