Iota keeps lead after 93-yard scoring drive

IOTA — In a way, Friday’s game between the Iota Bulldogs and St. Louis Catholic Saints can be summarized in one drive.

“That drive kinda set the tone for the second half,” said Iota coach Josh Andrus. “That was huge. I think that was the biggest part of the game, getting that drive and finishing it.”

Seemingly fitting for a game that ended 22-17 with the Bulldogs improving to 2-7 (1-3 District 4-3A).

After the Bulldogs forced yet another St. Louis (2-7, 0-4) turnover — this time a fumble on the Bulldogs’ 7-yard line late in the second quarter — Iota had a chance to, at the least, even the score with St. Louis.

Up by a field goal, St. Louis drove into the Iota red zone for the third time in the first half, but once again couldn’t punch it in.

“We got inside the 10 seven times and we scored 17 points, five (times) in the first half and we had three (points),” said St. Louis coach Charlie Cryer.

So the Bulldogs took over at their 7-yard line with 2:20 remaining.

That’s when it clicked for Iota. The sputtering offense drove 93 yards in 11 plays and saw Gavin Vidrine hook up with Cameron Ledet from 13 yards out. Then Kaleb Guillory tacked on the 2-point conversion. And there it was, an 8-3 lead that Iota would not lose.

“We stop them defensively and let them drive 90 yards and score with a second to go before the half,” said Cryer. “That hurt us.”

Guillory ended up with two touchdowns and 207 yards on 38 carries. Vidrine completed one pass on four attempts, his touchdown pass to Ledet.
