Big plays puts EB on top

James Bailey sprung free, sprinting out of sight for a 65-yard touchdown run that put his East Beauregard team up 14 points against Hamilton Christian.

Bailey’s defensive gem minutes later dwarfed any of his offensive prowess during his team’s suffocating 30-6 District 4-1A win Friday.

Playing back as a safety, Bailey recovered Kenan Fontenot’s fumble on the 3-yard line after a 43-yard pass, preventing a crucial score before halftime and quashing any uprising the Warriors planned.

Bailey, who finished with two touchdowns, paced East Beauregard’s trademark torrid rushing attack that had 203 yards in the game’s first 20 minutes and 309 total spread across six ballcarriers.

“It was a big play right before the half,” East Beauregard coach Gordy Glaser said. “Hamilton never quits, they play hard, they do a great job. I’m proud of our kids.”

Fontenot ran a double move before making an adjustment and catch, but lost control of the football while fighting for extra yards and trying to get into the end zone.

Labeled as “limited” by the shoulder injury that’s plagued him the last few weeks, Fontenot played one play of Hamilton’s first offensive series — catching a third-down screen pass that ended short of the line to gain.

His role most of the night was limited to receiving, catching three passes for 66 yards.

“I wanted to get him in there and let him play his senior night and hopefully he’ll be healed up a little more next week for South Cameron,” Warriors coach Mark Delaney said. “It shows a lot of heart and a lot of character. The body can only take so much pounding. He’s a real dedicated kid.”

Hamilton quarterback Luke Rougeau found Fontenot for a big fourth-down conversion on the Warriors’ first drive of the third quarter — one that ended a play later with Kaylon LeBlanc’s 2-yard touchdown that made it 14-6.

The teams traded three-and-outs before East Beauregard motored into the red zone as the third quarter ended, seeking a sealing score. A holding call impeded this, pushing it back to the 20 with goal to go. Noah Gill’s third-down pass was intercepted by Kierston Stevenson, keeping the game within reach.

Set up at its own 2, Hamilton Christian neglected to aid itself. An illegal shift was whistled before HCA could run its first play. A false start came two plays later, forcing a punt from the end zone.

Rougeau fielded a low snap, bobbled it, and mustered a punt to the 7. Bailey, who finished with 188 yards on 16 carries, scored two plays later to seal the win.

“They did a good job stopping us early, but a big, big key was us getting that turnover,” Glaser said. “It put us in good position to make it a two-score game. Our defense did a good job. Our kids were flat tonight. We played a big game last week and came out a bit flat.”

The two teams combined to throw 13 times, melting clock with rush after rush, making each possession more sacred than the last.

Operating without a placekicker, East Beauregard ran one full offensive series in the first quarter, ending when Ian James knocked Gill’s fourth-down pass away on the Warriors’ 8.

Gill threw two more passes — the interception and a wobbly, 7-yard completion to Zach Doucet that converted a third-and-7 on the team’s third drive of the game.

Two plays later, Bailey sprung for his 65-yard touchdown.
