Jeff Davis Parish students gather for College and Career Fair

JENNINGS — More than 800 Jeff Davis Parish juniors and seniors explored post-secondary education and career opportunities Thursday during the annual College and Career Fair.

Students met with and discussed their college and career paths with representatives from post-secondary institutions, businesses and the military.

“I hope that this helps them to see the many opportunities out there and help them to start narrowing down their options,” said Jennings High School counselor Meggan Marcotte.

“We want to do everything possible to help our students succeed at school and when they graduate.”

Halle Simien, a senior at Elton High, said she was exploring her options. “I plan to go to McNeese and major in education, but it is good to see all the options here,” Simien said.

Chris Miller, a junior at Elton High, said the fair gives students a glimpse at college and career possibilities and what life could be like after graduation.

“It is very important because if you don’t come out you don’t know what they have to offer,” Miller said. “I didn’t know some of these colleges even existed.”

Karli Grady, a senior at Lacassine High, has already applied for McNeese State University, where she plans to major in pre-vet, but said the fair gave her an opportunity to “look around.”

“It helps give students ideas of where they want to go to college and to determine what they want to do with their future,” she said. “It’s an important decision to make ... a big decision, so you need to be ready.”

Tyree Madden, a senior at Jennings High, has his eyes set on the Air Force. “At first I wasn’t for sure what I wanted and I wanted to know more about it,” Madden said, shortly after visiting with an Air Force recruiter.

Ainsley Delafosse, a junior at Hathaway High, was looking at different colleges. “This gives me an idea of what college to apply for,” she said.

Delafosse plans to major in either a foreign language or education.

Caroline Matte, a senior at Welsh High, attended the fair to learn more about how to apply for colleges, what finances are needed and what classes are available. She plans to attend McNeese and major in education. “I’m really looking forward to it,” she said.
