LAKE ARTHUR — Taylor Johnson ran for 181 yards and scored six touchdowns as the Kinder Yellow Jackets remained perfect in District 4-2A, beating the Lake Arthur Tigers 63-13 Friday night.
The victory set up a matchup for Kinder at Welsh next Thursday night for the district title.
The game belonged to the Yellow Jackets as they rushed for 257 rushing yards and had 93 passing yards.
“It was his turn tonight again tonight,” Kinder head coach Bret Fuselier said of Johnson’s performance. “The way Lake Arthur kept lining up it was favorable for Taylor as it looked as if they were trying to stop us on the edges.”
Lake Arthur received the ball first and wasted little time putting points on the board. The first play of the game saw Jayren McZeal score on an 80-yard run to take a 7-0 lead .
The scoring for the Yellow Jackets became plentiful after giving up the opening score. The Yellow Jackets’ first score was set up by a fumble on Tigers 20-yard line. Two plays later Johnson scored on a 7-yard to tie the score at 7-7.
Kinder (8-1, 4-0) would get three more scores before the end of the first quarter. The second score came on Johnson’s second touchdown of the first quarter to take 14-7 lead. The next score came on a Leonard Williams 15-yard. The final touchdown of the first quarter on Johnson’s third touchdown of the quarter on a 15-yard run to take a 28-7 lead.
Johnson scored his fourth touchdown in the second quarter on a 10-yard score to take a 35-7 lead. The next score came when Jordan Cordova scored on a 24-yard run with 4:08 to play in the second quarter. The final score of the half came on a 64-yard pass from Trent Johnson to Jordan Cordova to take a 49-7 lead with 43 seconds to play before halftime.
“I’m proud of how our kids responded as we had to punt on the first drive,” Fuselier said. “They had the ball up 7-0 and our defense just stepped up to the challenge and gave our offense the ball in the short field and our guys did a great job responding to that early adversity.”
The scoring didn’t stop in the third quarter as Kinder scored on the opening drive. Taylor Johnson scored his fifth touchdown on a 4-yard run to take a 56-7 lead with 9:54 to play. Johnson then scored his sixth touchdown on a 53-yard run for his final score with 8:32 left in the third quarter.
Lake Arthur got points on the board late in the fourth quarter. Trey Hargrave scored his lone touchdown on a 12-yard run with 5:19 to play.
Lake Arthur was led offensively on the ground by Hargrave, who finished with 106 yards on 23 carries. Jayren McZeal finished with 90 yards on seven carries.
