Prep football this week

Barbe (7-1, 4-1) at Sulphur (6-2, 4-0)

There is no shortage of story lines this week when the Tors host the Bucs at Matt Walker Memorial Stadium. The winner of the game gets at least a share of the District 3-5A championship. Barbe is playing its final regular season game before taking a week off before the playoffs. They also lead the all-time series 27-17 and hold an eight game win streak over the Tors. Sulphur has not beaten the Bucs or won a district title since 2007. The game will feature the Tors’ district leading offense (445.4ypg, 38.6ppg) and the Bucs’ district leading defense (250.3 yards, 16.1 ppg).

Sam Houston (1-7, 1-3) at Lafayette (1-7, 0-4)

The Sam Houston Broncos have played in four games decided by eight points or less this year but find themselves down to their final two games with just one win. They can double their win total this week with a win over Lafayette on the road. The Lions will be looking to rebound after a 69-24 loss at the hands of the Sulphur Tors last week.

DeRidder (2-6, 1-2) at LaGrange (3-4, 2-1)

The Gators will need to rebound after letting another close game slip away at Leesville last week, allowing 21 points in the final five minutes after holding the Wampus Cats scoreless to that point. The Dragons have struggled offensively after scoring a total of 58 points in back-to-back wins over Westlake and Crowley. They have scored 13 in the last two weeks, losses to Washington-Marion and Rayne.

Washington-Marion (3-5, 2-1) at Rayne (7-1, 2-1)

Each team’s fortune turned for the better last week, with Washington-Marion finding itself in the playoff hunt as well as in the mix for the district title. LaGrange’s loss gave Rayne renewed hope for the district crown. W-M has a couple of playmakers on offense in Gerron Duhon and Jacobi Taylor, but needs to stop Rayne’s bruising run game to have any chance at winning a third straight district game.

Crowley (2-6, 0-3) at Leesville (4-4, 2-1)

After defeating LaGrange last week, the Wampus Cats are now mixed up in a four-way tie atop the District 3-4A standings. They will look to remain in that top spot with a win against a struggling Crowley squad still looking for its first win in district play. Leesville Quarterback Theron Westerchil has led the Wampus Cats 850 yards and seven touchdowns through the air.

South Beauregard (7-1, 2-1) at Iowa (7-1, 3-0)

This game is riddled with District 4-3A title implications. South Beauregard must win to keep their district championship hopes alive, while Iowa wants badly to enter its final game against undefeated Jennings unbeaten in district. The game will likely see a clash of styles, as the run heavy Golden Knights — led by quarterback Hayden Gunter and Matt Uhlik — will take on the fast-paced Yellow Jackets squad led by receivers Andre Sam and Cole Fleming.

St. Louis (2-6, 0-3) at Iota (1-7, 0-3)

The Saints drew the short end of the scheduling this year, opening district play against South Beauregard, Iowa and Jennings, who have a combined record of 22-2. Iota RB Kaleb Guillory, a 1,000 yard rusher, will challenge the Saints defense. QB Bailey Hardy is the focal point of the new St. Louis spread offense, which takes advantage of his running and throwing skills.

Jennings (8-0, 3-0) at Westlake (2-6, 1-2)

The Rams showed a lot of improvement last week and even led South Beauregard in the first half but they will have to keep improving this week. The Rams will host undefeated and 3A No. 5 Jennings. There is no secret what the Rams will have to do this week to win; running back Travis Etienne, who has rushed for 1,571 yards and 25 touchdowns. A win this week would give the Bulldogs a share of the District 4-3A title and possibly set up a big district clash with Iowa next week.

Many (8-0, 3-0) at Rosepine (0-8, 0-3)

Rosepine has lost 18 consecutive games dating back to Week 2 of last year while Many’s only loss in its last 16 games was to West St. John in the second round of the playoffs last season. A Many win clinches a share of the District 3-2A crown for the Tigers.

Menard (6-2, 2-1) at Pickering (7-1)

Menard’s two losses are to Tioga, a 7-1 Class 4A team, and undefeated Many. The Eagles need to win out and hope Many drops a game to earn a share of the district crown. Pickering has won seven in a row and edged Menard in OT last year. RB Codie Williams has emerged as a star for the Red Devils, already surpassing 1,000 rushing yards on the season and scoring on a couple of kick returns.

Bunkie (3-5, 0-3) at Oakdale (3-5, 1-2)

Oakdale, currently ranked 19th, has yet to win back-to-back games this year and going into the playoffs with some momentum out be helpful. At No. 25 in the power rankings, Bunkie needs a win to keep their playoffs hopes alive. Oakdale’s passing game has been on the upswing lately and will be key this week. Quarterback Slate Jordan and wide receiver Terrance Holmes connecting for four touchdowns over the last two weeks.

Mamou (0-8, 0-3) at DeQuincy (4-4, 1-2)

The Tigers have lost four of five, but have a chance to build momentum heading into the playoffs with a pair of home games to close the regular season. DeQuincy has plenty of firepower on offense in QB Will Smith, RB Kaleb Buck and WR Adrian Gates. Mamou hasn’t score more than 14 points in a game this season.

Kinder (7-1, 3-0) at Lake Arthur (5-3, 2-1)

The Yellow Jackets look to extend their winning streak to eight games when they travel to Lake Arthur. The Tigers are led by senior running back Trey Hargraves, who has tallied 1,475 yards on 259 carries this season. Since getting shutout 34-0 its season-opening game against Jennings, Kinder has defeated its opponents 390-49.

Vinton (3-5, 0-3) at Welsh (8-0, 3-0)

The Vinton Lions are looking for anything they can to end their current five-game losing streak but it will not be easy this week. They will be going to the home field of undefeated Welsh. The Greyhounds’ defense is allowing just 12.8 points per game this year and held Mamou to just two last weeks. Vinton is coming off a pair of down-to-the-wire games and is looking to beat the Greyhounds for the first time since 2003.

Elton (3-5, 3-2) at Grand Lake (4-4, 1-4)

Both of these teams bounced back last week as the Indians dominated South Cameron and Grand Lake won its first district game with a 36-20 victory against Merryville. Both will try to capitalize on that momentum as they look to close out the season strong.

East Beauregard (6-2, 4-1) at Hamilton Christian (2-6, 2-3)

After falling to Oberlin last week, the Trojans will try to keep their chances at a share of the District 4-1A championship alive when they travel to Cougar Stadium to take on the Warriors of Hamilton Christian. The Warriors will also be looking to bounce back, as they suffered a 27-0 loss at the hands of Lake Charles College Prep last Thursday.

Basile (3-5, 2-1) at Catholic-Pointe Coupee (3-5, 2-1)

Basile is one of four teams in 5-1A tied for the lead at 2-1. The Bearcats will get a chance to knock off one of those teams this week then they travel to Catholic-PC. Basile had a two-game win streak snapped last week after a one-point loss to False River.
