St. Louis district champs

St. Louis extended its winning streak to seven games and clinched the District 2-III championship Tuesday night with a sweep victory against Jennings on senior night in its home gym.

The Saints (13-14, 5-0 District 2-III) dominated throughout its 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-8) victory against the Bulldogs (15-7, 2-3) trailing just once early in the third set and winning its 15th consecutive set in district play.

“Jennings has gotten much better than they have been in the past,” said St. Louis head coach Elizabeth Thompson. “So it feels good to take the district title. The girls have been working hard, and it’s a great thing to take into the playoffs next week.”

It didn’t take long for the Saints to get going, as they won the first six points of the first set and never looked back on its way to a 25-13 win to take the early advantage.

Jennings offered a little bit more resistance in the second set, only allowing St. Louis to string together more than three points in a row just twice.

But the Bulldogs struggled to put together a run, and the Saints slowly pulled together for another 25-13 win to move within a set victory from clinching the district title.

Jennings took its first lead of the contest when it went ahead 2-3 on a Saints net violation, but it didn’t last long.

St. Louis proceeded to score the next 11 points to take a 13-3 lead, and the Saints cruised to a 25-8 win to take the game and the match.

“I think we’re hitting our stride at the right time,” Thompson said. “Our last couple games have been really good. Things are starting to click people are starting to fill their positions like we hoped they would. And its right at the perfect time. We’re looking good going into the playoffs and I couldn’t be happier.”

Senior Abbie Martin led the way for the Saints, tallying four kills, three aces and nine digs in the final regular-season home game of her high school career.

“She’s been one of our most consistent players throughout the year,” Thompson said. “So it’s really great to see her these last few games really stand out and pick it up and become one of our outstanding players. She’s not somebody that flies under the radar, so I’m really excited for her to do that, especially in her senior year.”

Thompson she couldn’t be happier with her team’s performance in her first season, especially its play late in the season that earned the rookie coach her first District 2-III title.

“We couldn’t be in a better spot going into the playoffs, and I couldn’t ask more from my seniors this year,” Thompson said. “They’ve really bought into what I’ve been telling them, and they’ve showed it out there on the court.”
