Oberlin will be looking to earn the first share of a district title for a local team Thursday night, when the Tigers travel to South Cameron with a chance to clinch a share of the District 4-1A title.
Friday night, Kinder and Welsh will look to remain on course for a District 4-2A title-deciding game next week. No. 6 Kinder (7-1, 3-0) travels to Lake Arthur (5-2, 2-1) while No. 7 Welsh (8-0, 3-0) will host Vinton (3-5, 0-3).
Yellow Jackets head coach Bret Fuselier said the Tigers backfield, led by Trey Hargrave (1,475 yards, 14 TDs), presents a host of problems.
“Of course they have Hargrave, it seems like he has been there forever,” Fuselier said. “They have another good back (Jayren McZeal). He has proven that if you just look at Hargrave, he is capable of producing big runs against you. The quarterback (Donovan Benoit) does a good job, he can run it but can also throw it and has done a good job of getting the ball downfield. They are balanced and we are going to have to be ready for everything they throw at us.”
The Yellow Jackets defense has allowed only 49 points over the past seven games after allowing 34 in a season-opening loss to Jennings.
“Our secondary had to grow up, we saw some things early in the season, especially in that Jennings game, that we needed to correct,” Fuselier said.
“Our coaches have done a great job of getting our kids ready each week. We shuffled some kids around early on and kind of stuck with that plan and they have gotten better every week. It is always nice to see that, especially at this point in the season.”
Welsh hosts Vinton, who lost a nailbiter to Lake Arthur last week. The Lions are led by one of the area’s top backs in Tony St. Julien (997 yards, 12 TDs).
Greyhounds head coach John Richardson said discipline is needed to stop St. Julien from creating big plays.
“We have to know where he is at all times, contain him, not let him get to the perimeter and do a good job of tackling him,” Richardson said.
“He is certainly a good athlete. We have to make sure we line up correctly to what they are doing and stay in our lanes. A lot of his big plays have come on cutbacks. Our strong safeties have to do a good job of forcing it inside.”
Richardson said he likes the way his young offense has been playing. Welsh returned only two starters from last year.
“The biggest thing is we can be kind of versatile now as far as using multiple running backs and receivers,” he said.
“We are trying to be as balanced as we can. The running backs are doing a better job of hitting the hole, protecting the football and picking up blitzes, little things that come with experience.
Oberlin (6-2, 5-0) can clinch a share of the 4-1A title with a win over the Tarpons (3-5, 2-3). A win and East Beauregard loss to Hamilton Christian Friday night gives the Tigers the outright title.
The Tigers have won six straight since opening the season with losses to Class 2A Oakdale and Kinder. A win over South Cameron would give the Tigers four road wins in district.
In District 3-2A, No. 9 Pickering (7-1, 3-0) will look to continue its seven-game win streak when it hosts Menard (6-2, 3-0). A Red Devils win will likely set up a championship showdown in Week 10 against second=ranked Many (8-0, 3-0). The Tigers play at Rosepine (0-8, 0-3) this week.
