Three Point Stance: Big games ahead in final two weeks

We’re just two week away from the end of the high school football season. And as sad as that may be, that means district play is heating up and some of the most intriguing and important football games are right around the corner. Today, Tyler Nunez, Warren Arceneaux and Rodrick Anderson take a look at some of the more intriguing match-ups and teams to look out for in the closing games of the regular season.

What is the best small schools game on the Week 9 schedule?

TN: Oberlin at South Cameron: The Tigers took control of District 4-1A this past with a win against the only other previously unbeaten East Beauregard. Now, Oberlin quarterback James Kirklin and Co. will travel to South Cameron which, despite a loss to Elton in its most recent game, has looked much-improved since the return of quarterback Jakin Morales. An Oberlin win guarantees the Tigers at least a share of the district title, their first since 2012.

RA: Elton vs. Grand Lake: Besides District 4-1A leading Oberlin, the Elton Indians are the hottest team in 4-1A having won three of their last four games. The only loss was by four points to East Beauregard, who is currently second in the district. Elton sits at No. 15 in the latest power rankings and would secure a home playoff game if they win their final two regular season games. Standing in their way this week is a Grand Lake team that ended a four-game losing streak with a win over Merryville last week.

WA: Menard at Pickering: The Red Devils are on a roll with seven straight wins and close with two big games against Menard and Many, who have a combined record of 14-2. Pickering got a big boost with the return of starting quarterback Patrick Hinson last week and features one of the area’s best two-way players in Dontay Hargrave, a receiver/tight end/defensive back who can make big plays on both sides of the ball.

Which team most needs to win in Week 9?

TN: Pickering will host Menard on Friday as it looks to remain undefeated in District 3-2A. If the Red Devils pull off the win, they will eliminate Menard from district title contention and turn its season finale against Many into a district championship game.

RA: Lake Charles Prep is ranked 16th in the latest Class 1A power rankings but does not have an easy path to securing its first home playoff game in school history. They will be on the road for their final two regular season games starting this week at Merryville (1-7, 0-5) but the real test will be Week 10 when they face off with East Beauregard (6-2, 4-1). After starting the season 0-2, the Trailblazers have won three of their last five games which has allowed the to climb from 31st since Week 3.

WA: Basile. The Bearcats lost a tough one at False River last week, but has a chance to stay in the District 5-1A race by winning out. District leader False River closes with a pair of tough games against Central Catholic and Westminster. The Bearcats need to win out and have False River lose at least one to earn a share of the district title.

What is the best small schools rivalry in Southwest Louisiana?

TN: Kinder vs. Welsh: These two teams have not only emerged as the top two teams in District 4-2A but also in Class 2A. The game between these Kinder and Welsh is regularly a virtual district championship game, and the two even played each other for a spot in the Class 2A finals. This year, the stakes will likely be no lower, as both teams have steamrolled their way through district play, and they both currently sit amid the Top 5 in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association unofficial power ratings.

RA: DeQuincy vs. Vinton: The rivalry dates back as early as 1922 but the two teams did not start playing on a regular basis in 1931. Both teams have controlled the series at times and has produced many down-to-the-wire games including 22 decided by eight points or less. This year, 42 points were scored in the first quarter and the game wasn’t decided until DeQuincy scored 14 points in the final eight minutes of the game.

WA: The game that should be known as “The Cameron Cup,” South Cameron vs. Grand Lake. The only two football-playing schools in a parish full of tough, competitive people. It’s a can’t-miss. We get to see it grow as the Grand Lake program further establishes itself. Both programs have built momentum the past couple of years. The only thing missing is an actual cup to serve as a trophy. Get on it, businesses of Cameron Parish.
