LSU is off this Saturday, but next week for the sixth straight year the Tigers’ home showdown against No. 1-ranked Alabama will be CBS’ prime time game and kick off at 7 p.m.
The network must have been impressed with the return of Leonard Fournette.
The Tigers’ star, who set a single-game LSU record with 286 yards rushing Saturday against Ole Miss, was named the SEC’s offensive player of the week on Monday for his role in the 38-21 victory over Ole Miss.
Fournette broke the previous school record of 250 yards on just his eighth rush of the night while scoring on runs of 59, 76 and 78 and averaging 17.8 yards on his eventual 16 carries
“It was a privilege not just for me but for my entire offensive line,” Fournette said. “Without those guys and especially the wide receivers on the back end, it wouldn’t be possible.”
One of his blockers, center Ethan Pocic was named the SEC’s co-offensive lineman of the week.
Coaches said Pocic graded out at a career-best 97 percent while recording 12 knockdown blocks.
It was the second time this year that Pocic earned the award.
It was the first this season for Fournette, who had missed the previous two games and three total this year with a high ankle sprain. But it was the fourth time in his career to win the award and seventh overall time he’s earned a conference weekly honor.
He’s also the second LSU running back to win it this year as Derrius Guice won for his game against Missouri while Fournette was injured.
Prime time for the LSU-Alabama game is becoming a tradition.
Since the famed “Game of the Century” between No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama drew the higest ratings of the 2001 season, each year’s game has attracted the prime time spot.
LSU won that game 9-6, but Alabama won a rematch for the BCS national championship and has run its streak to five straight over the Tigers by winning the last four regular season meetings.
