BPPJ approves shorter work week

DERIDDER — The Beauregard Parish Police Jury approved the trial of a shorter work week for parish road crews Tuesday.

During a meeting of the panel’s road committee, police jurors discussed changing the five-day, eight-hour work week to a four-day, 10-hour week after a request for the change came from crew members.

Parish engineer Ronnie Dupont said that each day of the four-day week will run 6 a.m.-5 p.m. and that crews will remain on call on Fridays.

“They will be on call, but that is extremely rare for something to happen,” he said. “I have been here eight months, and we have only had that occur maybe three or four times since I have been in this position.”

Police Juror Mike McLeod agreed with the change, saying four-day work weeks could produce more efficient work crews.

The trial period would begin Monday, Nov. 6, and end on March 12. The Police Jury would then decide whether to adopt the schedule permanently or revert to five days.

The full panel will vote on the matter during its regular meeting Nov. 6.
