Church benefits from unclaimed property payout

First Assembly of God Church on Kirkman Street received a $235 check this week, courtesy of the state. The check was for unclaimed property that, before July, the church knew nothing about.

Over $22 million in unclaimed property — intangible or tangible property held by the state after the owner fails to claim it — is owed to Southwest Louisiana people and institutions just like First Assembly. But most never recover the money.

For those who do check the state’s unclaimed property list, the results can be profitable. One Louisiana man recently recovered over $30,000 in unclaimed property from an old inheritance, the state Treasury Department said.

Even if the amount isn’t in the thousands, recovered money can still be put to good use. First Assembly pastor Ken Sonnier said the money the church received this week will help fund church operations.

Sonnier said he was surprised to learn the church had unclaimed property. He said the possibility had never occurred to him until someone suggested he visit the department’s website.

“I just completely did not know or even think about it,” he said.

Sonnier said he filled out a small form online and received paperwork in the mail a few days later. He sent in the paperwork July 29 and received a check in the mail within three months.

“It was easy,” he said. “You just sit back and wait.”
