JENNINGS — Authorities said Monday they are trying to determine what happened to a Jennings man whose body was found in a canal north of Jennings last Wednesday.
Sheriff Ivy Woods said investigators are trying to piece together the last days of Dedrick Gant, 40, and are asking for the public’s help.
“We know he had not been seen in several days, but had not been reported missing,” Woods said. “Right now we are trying to go back and form a timeline with the last person he was possibly seen with.”
Investigators are asking anyone who may have been with or seen Gant before his death to contact the Sheriff’s Office.
The cause of death has not been released, but authorities say the death is considered suspicious and is being treated as a homicide.
A farmer found the badly decomposed body near an irrigation pump on the West Bayou Grand Marais canal off Aaron Road around 8:15 a.m. last Wednesday
“We don’t know where the body came from or if the pump drew him in or what,” Woods said.
The body could have been dumped in the canal near the irrigation pump or floated from the north or south of the canal which runs just north of Jennings, he said.
Tattoos were used to help identify Gant, he said.
Gant’s younger brother, Trey J’Won Gant, 19, was killed in a shooting on Dec. 22, 2015 in the 1300 block of West Street in Jennings.
Four people were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting, but charges were later dropped due to lack of evidence.
