The promise of sunny skies and fall temperatures will make for the perfect atmosphere for this year’s International Family Day in the Park being held this Saturday at Lock Park.
Founder Salemah Broussard is encouraging local families to attend the family-focused event that she hopes will provide a day of unity for families of all cultures and nationalities that make up southwest Louisiana.
“This is done solely to bring families together. We want to unite people, no matter what their background or nationality, and we want to unite families who might be divided amongst themselves. It is all about unity,” Broussard stated.
Since having a vision for the first family day in 2009, Broussard said that the event has grown each year and has even inspired her family members to host similar events in other cities including Atlanta, Philadelphia, Houston and even on the island of Trinidad.
Beginning at 9 a.m. and lasting through 8 p.m., the event will feature live entertainment and numerous workshops for the youth in attendance. The city of Lake Charles’ Parks and Recreation will also be providing treats, a fun jump and other games and activities for the children to enjoy.
A new addition to this year’s event will be a family movie to be played on a screen set up at the park itself.
“It’s something that we have seen at other events and we thought it would make a great addition to this year’s celebration,” Broussard said.
Broussard has also extended an invitation to local venders who would like to set up a booth at the park, and to local organizations with programs to assist localfamilies in need.
“We want to provide every opportunity to families who need help,” she said. “If anyone has items they wish to donate, they are encouraged to bring those as well, but we really want to make sure we can have information out there for families who need help to be able to receive that help.”
Lock Park is located at the corner of 7th Street and Dr. Michael DeBakey Drive, formerly known as South Ryan Street.
In the case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to a park located at the corner of Evans and Goos streets, Broussard stated.
