The Calcasieu Council on Aging will host a prom-themed masquerade ball this weekend to raise funds for its Meals on Wheels program.
The ball is set for 2-6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at The Brick House, 110 W. Pine St. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door or by calling 474-2583.
“This is for our seniors who are able to come out and enjoy themselves,” said Jacqueline Green, CCOA executive director. “They are going to be a blessing to our seniors who are home-bound.”
Green said the organization has been working with Southern Home Health to identify more seniors in need of the Meals on Wheels program.
“We have 160 people on the waiting list and when we ended our fiscal year and we looked back at the people who we really needed to impact, 35 of them had been on the waiting list since 2013 and we really want to help,” Green said.
Green said it costs CCOA about $1,400 a year to feed one senior.
“That is 250 serving days a year in which they’re provided a meal” she said. “The meal, of course, is so much more — it’s compassion and a doorknob, and we are absolutely a lifeline for those seniors who are home-bound and need our assistance.”
Green said the fundraising goal for the ball is $50,000, but that she thinks the grand total will be closer to $30,000.
“It’s really good for our first year, though, and we have already identified the people we are going to take off that waiting list so they will actually start receiving a meal on Monday,” she said.
Green said Louisiana Express, Ed Jardell and Louisiana Scramble will perform at the event.
“They’re going to be jitter-bugging and waltzing, and everybody gets to dress up and come out and have a good time,” she said.
Green said residents who drive to the event will be given golf cart rides from their car to the entrance. She said residents can also drive to the participating six senior centers and take a free bus ride to the event and back.
She said attendees can expect a good meal, court presentations and lots of dancing. The dress is cocktail attire or Sunday best.
“We can help our community by providing the small things that we all take for granted to keep that senior independent in their home and that’s our goal,” Green said.
