Local teams look to make statement in final week

We’re down to the final week of the high school football season.

I know, it feels like it just got started, but it’s not all bad news. It also means the playoffs are just around the corner, and there are a number of local teams with big games this week that could heavily impact their draw. Some will even play in what are essentially district championship games.

This week we’ll take a look at which local games in the final week of the regular season you should have your eye on as teams make their final cases for a favorable spot in the postseason.

Kinder at Welsh

Tonight’s game will be a rematch of last year’s Class 2A semifinal game and a battle between two of the area’s most dominant teams.

The Greyhounds (9-0, 4-0 District 4-2A) have defeated every single one of their opponents this season by at least 26 points, and since Kinder’s shutout loss to Jennings in week one, the Yellow Jackets (8-1, 4-0) have been equally as dominant, defeating their opponents by an average of just less than 49 points per game.

Kinder running back Taylor Johnson broke the 1,000-yard mark last week against Lake Arthur when he rushed for 181 yards and six touchdowns on 18 carries against the Tigers.

Meanwhile, the Greyhounds have quarterback Zach Hayes, who has emerged as one of the area’s top quarterbacks, throwing for 1,134 yards and 14 touchdowns with just four interceptions on the year.

This will be a district title game with a playoff atmosphere.

Jennings at Iowa

Everything in District 4-3A has been leading up to this game on Friday night.

The run-heavy Jennings Bulldogs (9-0, 4-0) led by the state’s top running back prospect Travis Etienne will meet the pass-happy Iowa Yellow Jackets (8-1, 4-0) in a matchup between two of the area’s most explosive offenses.

Both teams have shown dramatic improvement defensively since last year’s shootout that ended in a 76-54 Iowa victory, but both teams still have enough talent on offense to give every play the potential of being a big one.

This is another district title game that will have a postseason-like atmosphere. I heavily expect sparks to fly in this one.

Pickering at Many

The Red Devils have a chance to split the District 3-2A title if it takes down undefeated Many in the final game of the season.

Pickering will look to avenge its 35-21 loss to the Tigers last season and also make a case for a higher seed in the Class 2A playoffs.

Many has run through the rest of the district allowing just 25 points and accumulating 216 points in its first four district games.

But the Red Devils have had little trouble scoring this season, and they should be motivated coming off a 21-20 loss to Menard last Friday.
