Wine and cheese tasting kicks off Oberlin arts and crafts show

OBERLIN — The Ringing in the Holidays Arts and Crafts Show will be Nov. 11-12 at the Allen Parish Civic Center, 609 Tiger Lane.

The event will begin with a preview and a wine and cheese tasting 6-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11. Admission is $5 in advance or $6 at the door.

The event will continue 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12. Admission to the general market is $2.

Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus will be available for pictures 10 a.m.-noon. Santa will also be available 1-3 p.m.

Over 40 local vendors — including jewelry makers, woodworkers and seamstresses — will sell and display their crafts. Merchandise will include wreaths, bows, yard art and home decor.

“All items will be handmade with love and care,” said organizer Brenda Byrd. “We have so many talented people living in our parish and the immediate surrounding areas.”

Gumbo and barbecue burgers will be available for lunch Saturday for $5. There will be door prizes, and local musicians will provide entertainment both days. Event proceeds will help maintain the Civic Center, the parish’s largest venue.

The building wasn’t paid for by taxes and isn’t maintained by tax revenue, Byrd said. It’s managed and maintained with only the revenue it generates through rental fees.

“This event is our first attempt to increase revenues for the purpose of upgrades to this wonderful public facility, and it provides a local venue for our crafts people to show their beautiful work,” she said.

“Built for the people of Allen Parish over 20 years ago, this building is ideal for just such a purpose, and our goal is to keep it updated and well-maintained for many more years of public use.”
