Fit to be tied: Tors, Saints battle to draw

Sulphur and St. Louis battled to a 1-1 tie in a physical game that featured as many red cards as it did goals Tuesday afternoon at St. Louis Catholic High School.

Both teams finished the game a player short after a pair of goalie collisions.

“It’s a rivalry game,” said Sulphur head coach Trevor Foolkes. “It’s a physical game. It always has been and always will be. It’s one of those games that we put on the calendar each year and we look forward to.”

St. Louis committed the first major infraction and, as a result, played a man short for more than 30 minutes. But that’s not a fact that excuses the Saints’ (6-4-5) performance that head coach Jason Oertling said seemed uninspired.

“We were playing a man down for most of the game, but I feel like Sulphur outplayed us even when it was 11 versus 11,” Oertling said. “They were outhustling us; they wanted the ball more. I was a little disappointed. … I felt like we took a couple steps backwards today with the effort we gave.”

Despite not playing up to its coach’s standards, St. Louis took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute when Matthew Dufrene found T-Beau Faul for an open shot in front of the net.

The lead didn’t last long, however, as the Tors (7-6-7) responded when Matthew Griffith took the ball down the field and launched a shot into the net from just outside the 18-yard box.

“He got the ball from the left-back position, beat one or two guys and made perfect contact with the ball to the far post,” Foolkes said.

Sulphur had multiple chances to score with a one-man advantage in the second half, but the Tors were unable to find the net until suffering a red card of their own with about 12 minutes remaining in the game.

“That’s the story of our season,” Foolkes said. “We’ve had many opportunities. We’re just not finishing them. … We just have to keep practicing at it, put the work in, and get a little bit of luck, also.”

Neither team scored in the second half, resulting in the Saints’ fifth tie and Sulphur’s seventh.

Both coaches expressed a desire to start turning those draws into wins, especially with district play rapidly approaching.

“The good thing is that, even though we’ve got a bunch of ties, we’ve been playing against good competition,” Oertling said. “Sulphur’s one of those team that we’re going to look back to find they’ve had a successful season as well. At the end of the day, if we always put the soccer together with the effort, we’re going to succeed.”
