Hamilton learning on the job

Hamilton Christian advanced to the winners bracket of its own 16-team basketball tournament, the Showdown at the Lake, as it defeated Carver 64-33 Thursday in a dominant performance.

The Warriors used a strong second quarter to run away from Carver and never look back.

Despite margin of victory, Hamilton Christian head coach Dexter Washington said his team has a lot to improve on before it’s prepared for the postseason.

“We’re still trying to discover our team,” Washington said. “We have a bunch of kids, and this is basically a brand-new team, outside of Camren (Hare) and Kenan (Fontenot). We’re just trying to put the pieces together.”

After a back-and-forth first quarter that ended with Hamilton Christian trailing 14-13, Washington was none too happy.

“We’re not tough enough yet,” he said. “We’re going to be, but we’re not tough, and my kids aren’t scrappy and tough. They don’t have that killer mentality to put them away.”

The Warriors ran away from the Rams, outscoring them 21-4 in the quarter to take a 16-point halftime lead.

Hare finished up with a game-high 26 points.

“Hare did a great job shooting the ball,” Washington said. “He’s much stronger, physically and his shot selection is much better. He worked hard during the offseason, and he has the mind-set that he wants to win.”

Ouachita 52

LaGrange 37

Earlier in the day at Lake Charles-Boston, LaGrange started fast but struggled offensively down the stretch, and Ouachita ran away with a the win.

LaGrange used staunch defense to quell the Ouachita attack in the first half, and as a result, the Gators went into the halftime break with a 22-18 lead.

The Lions’ depth proved to be too much for the Gators, however, as they ran away in the second half thanks to fresh bodies.

“We did play without our point guard,” lamented LaGrange head coach Nathaniel Perry. “So we were kind of down. But hats off to (Ouachita). They came with a game plan to stop our best guy (J’son Brooks), and limited his touches.”

The Gators made three field goals in the second half. Brooks finished with 17 points, 12 in the first half.

Nine Ouachita players got on the scoreboard but none finished in double figures.

“They played a lot of guys, and I didn’t have my best ball handler,” Perry said. “That limited the things we can do on the floor. All we can do is just go back and just watch film and see what we failed at.”
