Tanks keeps Bucs unbeaten

A big first half from Divine Tanks led the Barbe Lady Bucs to a 56-35 win over host St. Louis Thursday in the first day of the Lakeside National Bank Winter Ladies Classic.

Tanks scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the first half for the Bucs (6-0). She finished with 14 points, 12 rebounds and a steal. She scored the final five points of a 13-0 run in the first half that gave the Bucs a 23-7 lead.

St. Louis (3-3) played without leading returning scorer Alex Goodly.

The Saints hung around, pulling within 10-7 on a 3-pointer by Briona Allison midway through the first quarter before committing a host of turnovers to contribute to the Bucs run. The Saints turned the ball over eight times in the first quarter.

Tanks scored Barbe’s first nine points of the second quarter.

“Divine is one of the only ones that really showed up in the first half,” said Barbe head coach Kelly Durio. “She really gave her best effort. When she is in there crashing the boards and finishing the shots the others are missing from the outside, it is definitely a benefit to us.”

Durio said she was not pleased with the inconsistent performance of her team.

“Our focus was not good this afternoon,” she said. “I hope we get locked in for (Friday’s) game.”

Ashlyn Poole and Brandi Williams scored 12 points each. Elisia Smith led St. Louis with 12 points. Allison scored nine points.

Barbe plays North Central at 5 p.m. today. The Saints play Lake Charles College Prep at 3:30 p.m.

The Gators started with a 13-3 run and cruised to the easy win.

Brije Williams scored six points in the run and finished with a game-high 15 points. Dalaisha Thomas added 13 for the Gators (5-3), who trailed once, at 1-0, and held the Eagles to 12 points over the first three quarters.

Gators head coach La’Keem Holmes said the Williams, Thomas and fellow senior Najah Brown make the Gators go.

“The others don’t have a lot of experience. We start a freshman and our sixth man is a freshman,” Holmes said. “We lean on our seniors. They are putting the team on their back. We are playing with more confidence this year.

“We had a great summer. We played 28 games and now the seniors have a different attitude. They are taking a lot more responsibility and leading the charge. We are playing much harder this year. I am excited for the rest of the season.”

Holmes said the Gators are playing well defensively.

“I like the energy we are playing with on the defensive side, we just have to let that carry over to offensive side,” he said. “We have to learn to finish better than we have been; that will make it easier to get out in transition and run. We have some things to clean up offensively, but we will get there.”

Kierslynn Lawless led St. Mary’s (4-5) with nine points. Kia Batiste added eight.

The Gators host Sulphur in a nondistrict game tonight before returning to tournament play Saturday. St. Mary’s Academy plays Academy of Our Lady at 6:30 p.m. today.
