James Doxey has lived at Chateau du Lac for nine years and said that for some residents the annual Phillips 66 Christmas celebration, which took place Friday, is the only Christmas they will have.
“It’s just fabulous,” said Doxey, 57. “This party benefits our residents, and it really lifts their spirits. We are all very grateful. We get to enjoy a wonderful meal, which is always so delicious, every resident receives a gift, and we even have entertainment.”
A team of employee volunteers from the Phillips 66 Lake Charles Manufacturing Complex, along with students from LaGrange High School, scooted around the event visiting with residents; handing out gifts; and serving lunches of turkey, cornbread dressing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, green beans, rolls and cake.
Tanna Leger, 68, has lived at the high-rise for two years and said she enjoyed everything about the party from the Elvis impersonator to Santa’s visit and especially the food because “it was delicious and I didn’t have to cook it.”
“My house burned down and not too long after that, my husband passed away,” she said. “It was such a difficult time and I was grateful to be able to move to this community at Chateau du Lac. And to be able to enjoy something like this with everyone today is just so wonderful.”
Another resident, Minnie Sweet Goings, 74, said that “all of us are just so appreciative for this great meal and all of the hospitality we are getting to share with each other today. ... Just look around at the smiles on the faces of everyone and see how much they are enjoying the day.”
Mike Strickland, a contract employee with Stronghold Specialists who is working at Phillips 66, portrayed Santa for the luncheon, and he visited and took photos with many of the residents, including Chris Short, 36, who said, “This is so cool. I’m taking a selfie with Santa.”
Phillips 66 employee Dennis Soileau portrayed Elvis, and he sang and danced around the room to the delight of many of the residents, some of whom sang and danced with him.
This marks the 10th year that Phillips 66 has sponsored a Christmas party for the residents of Chateau du Lac, which consists primarily of elderly and disabled people.
“Our employees look forward to the continuing tradition of spreading some Christmas cheer, fun and fellowship with the residents,” said Richard G. Harbison, refinery manager. “It’s a great way to kick off the holiday season.”
Pat Lang, 74, has lived at Chateau du Lac for 22 years and said, “Home is what you make it and I love my home here. My kids and grandkids come and visit me, and I have good friends here too. Look at my gift (a soft red blanket) I got today; isn’t it beautiful? I’m so thankful to Phillips 66. I can’t tell you how much I look forward to this party every year. Oh, what a blessing this has been.”
