LEESVILLE — City officials want to extend the city’s boundaries and incorporate over 84 acres of a nearby highway in the hopes of generating more growth for the area.
The City Council on Monday approved a motion to annex about a quarter-mile of frontage property along La. 28 East, as well as lay new water and sewer lines along the route to benefit existing and future businesses.
“I’m very excited about this expansion, and I believe it will present great opportunities for development and growth for both the city and the parish,” Mayor Rick Allen said.
Allen had a heated exchange Monday with a business owner with property in the annexed area, but said all other commercial property owners in the area have expressed approval of the expansion.
“We just laid new sewer lines down so that those businesses can tap into the sewer line,” Allen said. “One business was about to have to spend nearly $13,000 on a commercial system that they can now get by tapping into the existing line for just a few hundred dollars.”
He said the city would seek approval of the annexation from the state. The motion will be final next week, Allen said, but no tax revenue for the city will be generated until next year.
