WELSH — The State Bond Commission has given final approval to allow Welsh to issue $250,000 in certificates of indebtedness to offset the cost of buying a new garbage truck.
“We had paid $1.5 million from a previous bond for electrical work and have been clearing the way and getting things paid off to be able to get things like this done,” Mayor Carolyn Louviere said.
The certificates will allow the town to move forward on plans to buy the truck, she said.
“We have already started looking at the specifications for a new garbage truck,” Louviere said.
The State Bond Commission approved the issuance of the certificates on Nov. 17. Municipalities that incur debt must get state approval. The debt will be repaid with funds from the town’s general funds.
The purchase of a new truck is expected to take about six months. It will replace an older garbage truck that the town has been using.
“We have two garbage trucks now,” Louviere said. “One is older and we have had it for years and used it as our backup.”
The town plans to designate the old truck as surplus once the new one is put into operation.
“We do take care of our own garbage pickup, and these trucks require constant maintenance,” Louviere said. “We have one truck now that is good, but the other one is breaking down quite often.”
The new truck will allow the town to continue to serve the public even if one of the trucks is down, she said.
“I am looking forward to it,” Louviere said. “Anything and everything that we can do to improve our service to the people is important to us because whatever is not working right is a worry to us. If we can’t pick up garbage, people start complaining and I don’t blame them.”
She said the town is constantly buying, repairing and replacing equipment to maintain services. The town picks up residential trash three days a week, with business services provided twice a week.
