Moral victory for Hamilton: Warriors display toughness

The scoreboard showed a Hamilton Christian loss to Landry-Walker in the second round of the Hamilton/Showdown in the Lake tournament, but Warriors head coach Dexter Washington was holding his head high after the 49-42 defeat Friday night.

“It is a loss, but it doesn’t feel like one,” Washington said. “Mentally it feels like a win. We competed. So far we had not been mental warriors, but today we showed it. We didn’t back down. We held a high-scoring team to 49 points.

“They play a different style of ball in New Orleans, whistles are few or none. We competed with them. We played well defensively and didn’t too bad on the boards. We didn’t make shots, but that is going to come.”

Malik Lagonia led with Charging Bucs with 22 points. Landry-Walker (3-2) advanced to face Lafayette Christian in the semifinals at noon today.

Hamilton Christian will play in a consolation-round game at 10:30 a.m.

Landry-Walker led by 15 points midway through the third quarter, but Hamilton stormed back by scoring the last nine points of the quarter. Jordan Vince scored the final seven points in the Hamilton run, including 3-pointer on the final possession to pull the Warriors within 36-30.

The Warriors got as close as five in the final quarter, on a floater by freshman guard Michael Thomas, who injected some life into the Warriors’ offense off the bench.

“It was his first game; he has a good feel and can make things happen with the ball,” Washington said.

“We have to learn to start moving when he gets into the lane. We were just standing around when we could have gotten some easy shots. Defensively, we missed a couple of rotations but played pretty good. When we were in the zone, we missed a couple of shooters. They run some nice stuff on offense.”

Dywan Griffin added nine points for Landry-Walker. Vince led HCA with 13 points.
