The trial of an 18-year-old Sulphur man accused of murder began Monday with jury selection.
Antonieo Smith faces one count of second degree murder along with charges of attempted second degree murder, aggravated burglary and armed robbery.
Authorities state that Smith waited inside the Majestic Pines Drive home of Robert and Rita Anderson on May 16, 2016 and then stabbed the Sulphur couple multiple times upon their arrival. Robert Anderson was pronounced dead at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital. Rita Anderson survived the attack.
Smith then fled the scene in the couple’s pickup truck, according to Kim Myers, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, and crashed it after colliding with other motorists on Broad Street. Myers said that Smith was detained at the scene and charged after being taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
Before the start of jury selection Monday, a hearing was held on a defense motion to change Smith’s plea from not guilty to not guilty by reason of insanity.
Judge David Ritchie denied the motion, stating that the defense did not show “good cause.” He also denied the defense’s motion for a continuance.
Smith’s trial will resume today in Ritchie’s courtroom.
