Three Point Stance: LHSAA convention: Championship here to stay

What is your biggest takeaway from the LHSAA convention held last week?

RA: The proposal by Iowa High School Mike Oakley to cut down on the numbers of classes and divisions should have been passed. Even before the current select/non-select split, Class B and C should have long been done away with. Whether you like the split or not, it is here to stay, but reducing the number of championships would have improved on the quality of playoffs games immensely.

TN: The principals of the state are apparently content with the current playoff system, or at least they don’t want to deal with the hassle of changing it. Iowa principal Mike Oakley submitted a proposal that would have significantly reduced the number of state championships awarded, and even offered an amendment last minute that would have postponed the change until the 2019-2020 school year. But the principals voted down that amendment and then the proposal, and it wasn’t even close. It looks as though we can expect the current system to remain in place for the foreseeable future.

WA: Principals like trophies and will never vote to decrease the number of them given out no matter how absurd things get. Also, changing rules for sports have already begun should not be allowed.

What is the best boys game on the schedule this week?

RA: With the District 4-3A season at its midpoint, Friday’s matchup between the Westlake Rams and Jennings Bulldogs will be a must win for both schools. Both teams are currently just one game behind district leaders South Beauregard and St. Louis. Look for a fast paced game as both team rely on speedy guards.

TN: I like the styles clash that St. Louis’ game against Jennings will likely be. The Bulldogs love to run the floor with their athletic guards while the Saints are much more comfortable in the half court. Whoever controls the tempo in this one will likely exit with a win.

WA: I like revenge and district championship tiebreaker games. Lake Charles College Prep can get the former and help set up the latter with a win at Hamilton Christian Friday night. The Blazers are the only District 4-1A team to stay close to the Warriors this season, losing by nine at home. LCCP has won five straight by double digits since then and will get a chance to measure their progress in the rematch with the Warriors.

What is the best girls game on the schedule this week?

RA: With a two game lead in the District 4-3A race, Iota can wrap up the championship this week with a win in either of its two home game against Iowa on Tuesday and St. Louis on Friday. Iota will have tough match up against the Lady Saints who they beat by just seven in the first match up in Lake Charles.

TN: The first game between Barbe and New Iberia was decided by six points in the Bucs favor, but New Iberia has a history of peaking late in the season and making long postseason wins. The Jackets have won four of their last five games, suffering only a narrow loss to a good Sam Houston team. Their game tonight is one of two big tests left for Barbe as they attempt to stay perfect in district play.

WA: St. Louis hosts Jennings Tuesday night in a game with big implications. Both teams are in the hunt for a top four seed — the Saints in Division III, the Dogs in Class 3A. With Friday’s rule change mandating that the higher seed play at home in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs, finishing in the top four of the power ratings ensures home games in rounds one and three. The winner of Tuesday night’s game with get a big ratings boost. Jennings is coming off a massive win over South Beauregard and will look to keep the momentum rolling. St. Louis won the first meeting by six.
