Lake Charles’ first baby born in 2017 was an unexpected but very good “New Year’s gift” for her mother.
“I think I’m a lucky girl starting the new year off like this,” said Kayla Richard, 28, of Lake Charles.
Kaysia Lee Richard wasn’t due to arrive until Jan. 8. But she decided to make her way into this world on the morning of Jan. 1 at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for Women. According to Kayla, she weighed 6lbs. and measured 18 ½ inches long.
“I was in labor at home since midnight, but I wasn’t sure. So, I waited until I couldn’t tolerate it anymore,” said Kayla, “I got here around 4 a.m. and had her at 9:08 a.m.”
She said that the labor and delivery went well. “I pushed like four or five times and then she was here. It went fast,” said Kayla.
She said that her other two children – daughter, Kayleia Richard, 6, and son, Zakarij Cahee, Jr., 3 – adore their little sister.
“My daughter said that she is so cute, and my son said that she is his baby. When he got here, he didn’t talk to anyone but her. And he has played patty-cake with her,” said Kayla.
The mother of three also expressed her own excitement over having the first baby born in Lake Charles in 2017. “Things like this don’t happen to me. I feel so lucky,” said Kayla.
She also said that she is looking forward to the new year, especially after having recently moved and completing school. Kayla had been studying medical coding and billing.
“I want to start a new career,” she said, “And then everything else will follow.”
