MOSS BLUFF — Connor Cudd, the Sam Houston Bronco who accepts any role, took a starring one Tuesday night as the Broncos remained atop the District 3-5A baseball standings with a 6-2 win over Sulphur.
Cudd, just reinserted into the starting lineup, had a two-run, two-out single in the third inning as the Broncos (20-4, 4-0) scored five times to take command of the game.
Broncos head coach Chad Hebert said Cudd is a model member of the program.
“Our seniors really lead us, in particular Cudd,” Hebert said. “He began the season as a starter, then came in today after (Mason) Stutes broke a finger and had the big two-run single. He is the spiritual leader of the team. I can’t say enough about him. He works every single day and waits for his opportunity.
“He got it today in the biggest game of the season for us and comes through with the big hit to put distance between us and them. He doesn’t get at-bats every day like everyone else. He doesn’t play every day. He courtesy runs, he pinch hits. He has been working while he waits. He never complains. He is so positive with his teammates. Why does he show up? Because he is a good person with character.”
Chris Haggard doubled and scored a run in the first inning for Sam Houston and hit a solo home run in the third. The Broncos scored two runs on a two-out, bases-loaded error before Cudd’s big hit made the score 6-0.
Peyton Johnson threw a complete-game two-hitter, striking out nine and allowing three hits. He retired the first 12 batters he faced.
The Tors (16-7, 1-2) scored twice in the sixth. Brody Strahan walked and Devon Lebrun followed with a double. Chance Stone hit a grounder to first to score a run and Hadyn Stutes added an RBI single.
“(Johnson) is a guy that just hits spots,” Hebert said. “His changeup is his best pitch and he used it over and over again. Sulphur is a good team. Stone (Sulphur’s starting pitcher) is a college arm and (reliever Will Dion) kept us off the board the last three innings. They are going to be in at the end. They are the kind of team you have to beat to win a state championship.”
