The Louisiana-Lafayette baseball team finished its game at Joe Miller Ballpark with five hits, but all it really needed to pick up the 3-1 victory against McNeese State were the two that went over the left-field wall.
The Ragin’ Cajuns (14-9) scored three runs on a pair of home runs and shut McNeese down with solid pitching to end the Cowboys’ home win streak at 16 games.
“They were frustrated,” head coach Justin Hill said McNeese at the plate. “That’s the first time a pitching staff has taken it to us for a little bit. They’ll be a little bit upset and they’ll play with a bit of a chip on their shoulder just like they have all year.”
The Ragin’ Cajuns pitching staff allowed two hits and an unearned run, striking out seven batters while walking three.
Jack Burk (1-3) earned the win after pitching six innings allowing two hits and a run. Dylan Moore got the save, striking out two McNeese batters in a shutout last inning.
Aidan Anderson (2-2) got the loss after giving up two earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
Hill said Anderson and the pitching staff did what was expected of them.
“All in all, I think our pitching staff threw well enough to win the ballgame,” Hill said. “Just not tonight.”
ULL second baseman Brenn Conrad earned the first hit of the game with a double in the second inning followed by a Steven Sensley home run that gave the Cajuns a 2-0 lead.
Aidan Anderson gave up a pair of singles and walked a batter to load the bases with one out, but after a mound visit from Hill, he struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning trailing by two runs.
The Cowboys (18-7) responded with a run in the bottom half of the second inning, thanks in large part to an error by ULL shortstop Hunter Kasuls that put Nate Fisbeck and Shane Selman on second and third, respectively, with no outs.
“We have to know when we have those opportunities, they matter and they matter immediately,” Hill said. “When you get opportunities to get a run in you have to take advantage of it, especially if you know your opponent and you know what they can do.”
Will Fox grounded out to second base, but two short pop-outs to second base stranded Fisbeck on third base.
That’s all the offense McNeese would see, other than an infield single by Robbie Podorsky that extended his hit streak to 18 games.
“They kept us off balance all night, and you really have to give credit to somebody who can do that consistently,” Podorsky said. “The more adjustments we made, they just kept making more adjustments. They kept us off balance and that’s where most of the frustration came from.”
The score remained 2-1 until the seventh inning when Ragin’ Cajuns catcher Handsome Monica hit his first home run of the season off relief pitcher Peyton McLemore, extending ULL’s lead to 3-1.
Reliever Evan Guillory and closer Dylan Moore shutout the Cowboys in the final three innings to secure the victory.
“This isn’t going to be a detrimental loss for us by any means,” Hill said. “The biggest thing is I hope we learn from it so when we do get those opportunities we make the most of them.”
