The trial of a 26-year-old Lake Charles woman charged with the second-degree murder of her 4-month old son has been delayed.
Courtney Morris was arrested on July 27, 2016 after a coroner’s office autopsy report showed that the baby had a blood-alcohol level of 0.0475. The autopsy was part of a routine sudden infant death investigation conducted after Lake Charles police received a call July 14, 2016 about a dead infant at a Fox Run Drive apartment. The child had been found lying face down but had no signs of injuries, said Chief Don Dixon at the time.
Police also arrested the baby’s father, Larry Champ, 41, in connection with the child’s death, and both Morris and Champ were indicted in Sept. 2016 for second-degree murder. Champ is set to go on trial May 1.
On Monday, defense attorney Robert Shelton motioned to continue Morris’ trial date, which was slated to begin that day, due to his recent eye surgery. Judge Sharon Wilson granted it. Shelton also filed a motion for a speedy trial.
Prosecutor Adam Ortego then stated his understanding that the defense was contemplating a bench rather than a jury trial - a decision that would affect the new date. Shelton said it was still under consideration. Wilson cautioned him that the court needed the decision soon due to time constraints.
A jury trial was tentatively scheduled for May 15.
Morris and Champ are both currently in custody at the Calcasieu Correctional Center.
