MusicMakers2U invites locals to “dust off and donate” their used musical instruments to local students through its fourth annual instrument drive March 17-31 at CSE Federal Credit Union locations.
The nonprofit partners with local school band directors and music teachers to pair the donated instruments with McNeese music majors and middle and high school students across the five-parish area.
Founder and board president Eva LeBlanc said MusicMakers is in particular need of trumpets, flutes, clarinets, saxophones and trombones, though past donations have ranged from accordions to xylophones.
Instruments are accepted in any condition, and MusicMakers cleans and repairs them before distribution.
Donations can be dropped off at CSE Federal Credit Union locations at 4321 Nelson Road in Lake Charles, 2154 Swisco Road in Sulphur and 1170 Sam Houston Jones Parkway in Moss Bluff.
Since its founding in September 2013, MusicMakers has “taken off like a rocket,” pairing over 300 instruments with students, LeBlanc said.
Schools have limited numbers of instruments for student use, LeBlanc said, and students who don’t receive one have to shell out money to rent or buy their own.
Connor Couvillion, an eighth-grader at S.J. Welsh, received a trombone from MusicMakers two years ago.
The donation has enabled Couvillion, a longtime music fan, to participated in honor band and honor jazz band. He twice received superior ratings in solo and ensemble music competitions.
“It means a lot and opens up a lot of opportunities,” Couvillion said. “I’m able to put effort and time toward something I love.”
After receiving a MusicMakers instrument, students and parents agree to care for the instrument and return it if it’s no longer needed.
Donors provide contact information for students to send thank-you notes or invitations to recitals. The student recipients also collaborate for a music show titled “An Afternoon with MusicMakers,” scheduled for May 20 this year.
Though MusicMakers particularly pushes for donations during the March instrument drive, CSE, a MusicMakers sponsor, accepts instruments at all three locations year-round.
MusicMakers also accepts monetary donations to support the cleaning and refurbishment of instruments. Visit http://ift.tt/2mKHrn1 or call 337-244-9314 for more information.
