Texas chainsaw carver to host demonstrations this weekend

A sale at a local business will provide a one-of-a-kind sideshow this weekend as Texas chain-saw carver Della Meredith prepares to show off her unique woodworking skills.

Meredith will carve a log into a work of art 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, March 10, and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 11, at Moss Bluff Mower Sales.

“It’s always fun to see the crowds watching as I work,” she said.

“Depending on the details, I can create a single piece in a few hours, so I hope to be able to offer a few awesome works for everyone to see.”

This will be the fourth event in which Merdith has been featured in the two years she’s been honing her craft as a chain-saw carver.

Meredith, a former high school art teacher, said she never imagined she would one day become an artist with a power saw.

“I really never knew I could do this kind of work,” she said. “I was working on a contract with a business that wanted some carved totem poles, and so I just decided I would try to do it myself.”

Meredith began that project with only a piece of wood and her chisels, but when the project began taking too long she turned to a small power saw she found at a local pawnshop.

She said she surprised even herself with her abilities, and after showing off her works on social media quickly developed a long list of clients.

“I began this wondering how would I get enough people interested in buying carved pieces from me to now I have a waiting list of projects,” she said. “It has been so overwhelming, but so wonderful all at the same time.”
