Man shot in shoot-out with Allen deputy

KINDER — Authorities say an Allen Parish sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded a man who shot at the deputy as he was trying to arrest the man Thursday.

Michael Hidalgo, 47, of Kinder was shot by a deputy responding to a call of suspicious people around a residence on Langley Camp Road, just west of Kinder, Sheriff Doug Hebert III said.

“As the deputy was identifying and talking to the suspect, he found he had an outstanding bench warrant for failure to appear,” Hebert said. “As the deputy told him to turn around, that he was under arrest, the suspect pulled a gun from his waistband and shot at the deputy.”

The deputy returned fire, shooting Hidalgo four times in the lower abdomen, hip area and ankle, Hebert said.

Hidalgo was flown to Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, where he was listed in critical condition, Hebert said.

The deputy, who was only identified as a veteran officer, wasn’t injured and has been placed on administrative leave pending investigation by state police, he said.

Hidalgo will be charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, Hebert said. Two other people were with Hidalgo but weren’t arrested, he said.

This is the second deputy-involved shooting since May, when a deputy shot a man who pointed a rifle at him on Eli Smith Road, south of Oberlin. The man ignored repeated commands to drop the weapon, before pointing the rifle at the deputy, authorities said.
