VINTON — Calcasieu Parish sheriff’s deputies have arrested a 70-year-old Vinton man in the Wednesday night shooting of man found dead in a residential driveway.
Sheriff Tony Mancuso said authorities received a call about the shooting at about 5 p.m. Wednesday. They found Michael G. Fountain, 56, dead in the driveway of the residence.
At the time, a man and a woman were detained for questioning.
Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kim Myers said Thursday that the initial investigation revealed Frin W. Coward, 70, 1751 La. 109 South, and Fountain, who were acquaintances, were involved in an argument when Coward fired several shots, killing Fountain.
She said Coward admitted shooting Fountain and was charged with second-degree murder. Judge Guy Bradberry set bond at $1.5 million.
James Planchard, an employee of T&H Car Care across the street from the crime scene, told the American Press on Wednesday that he was working outside when he saw a woman run across the yard “hollering and screaming.” He said he heard three consecutive gunshots.
“She made it across the yard and started running down the street until I couldn’t see her anymore,” Planchard said.
Myers said Thursday that the woman is an acquaintance of both Fountain and Coward but isn’t believed to be involved in the shooting.
She said the woman flagged down a motorist, who drove her to a convenience store for safety.
Mancuso said the case is the first homicide of the year for the Sheriff’s Office.
