Area experiencing rash of holes-in-one

There seems to be more holes-in-one being made by area golfers this early in the season than before.

Club pros George McInnis at Frasch Park in Sulphur and Dave Kaspar at The National in Westlake said that it may seem so, but they have nothing to certify that.

The latest to collect an ace were Bobbie Arnold at Gray Plantation and Robert Robertson at The National. Arnold aced the 17th hole at Gray with a 9-iron. It was the fourth in her career.

The 67-year-old Robertson knocked in an 8-iron from 167 yards on the 15th hole at The National for his third ace.

Arnold, with four aces, is one of the area’s leaders for the women with Olga Watts at the top with five holes-in-one.

Also with four aces is Erin Kennedy Allen. She seldom plays now, but was a standout on the McNeese golf team. Husband Neithan Allen, a local multi-city champion and the only player to have won all three area city titles in the same year, has one.

As for the men, no one is close to the 30 career aces that Don Scott has had.

Willie Wood, a former resident and Barbe High standout now playing the PGA Tour Champions, has 20 in his career, while father Willard Wood had 11. The only other local player with double-figure aces is Reed Fontenot with 10.

Lake Charles Country Club assistant pro Greg Sonnier leads the local club pros with eight while McInnis and Kaspar have four each, Tyler Kuhn of Gray has three, Derek Smith of Mallard Cove has five and Stuart Kramer of the LCCC has one.

Golfers with nine holes-in-one include former PGA Tour player Mike Heinen, Quitman Moon and Bear Suarez. One of Heinen’s aces came at Pebble Beach during that PGA event.

APT tour player (formerly the Adams Tour) Ben Suarez has had one ace.

Keith Brown has had eight holes-in-one and Matt Nicholas, another multi-city champion, has had six along with Johnny Beaugh while John Byles has had five.

A couple of notes about local aces: One, Dick Nicholas aced all four par-3s at the Lake Charles Country Club in one calendar year, and, two, Eric Turnbull aced the 14th hole at the Country Club one day, saved the ball and aced the same hole with the same ball the next day.

We may have missed some golfers with five or more career aces, and if we get such we will pass along their names.

Barbe High standout Gage Primeaux has taken over the area prep scoring lead after winning last week’s Bayou Rapides Invitational, his third tourney title. He shot 67-67 in the event and possesses a 69.2 average.

St. Louis Catholic High’s Logan Kuehn is second with a 73.7 average with Eric Brown of Hamilton Christian (73.7), Brayden Wright of Sulphur (74.5) and Nick Guillory of Barbe (75.8) rounding out the top five.

The girls scoring leaders remained the same with no tournament last week. Sulphur’s Brooke Tyree is tops with a 72.8 mark.

The local girls Southwest Louisiana Junior Golf Association travel team were in action last week placing fourth out of 18 teams in an event at the Kingwood Country Club in Houston. Tyree lead the team with a seventh-place showing of 78-75.

The 24th annual Ray Dingler Memorial is scheduled to run May 2 at the Lake Charles Country Club. It’s a four-person scramble with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
