Nancy Carlton knows life can change in an instant because she saw it happen several months ago after going out to dinner with friends to celebrate their son Dylan Broussard’s 18th birthday. “He was fine and we had a great evening that was a lot of fun,” Carlton said.
But she said the next day Broussard told his family he found some lumps on his neck. “He got an appointment immediately,” she said. “And the doctor told them that if he had waited even a week or two to get it checked out it would have been too late for them to do anything to help him.”
Broussard, a senior at Sulphur High School, was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia in October. Because of his illness he has already received several blood transfusions.
A blood drive for Broussard, who lives in Carlyss, will be 11 a.m.-3 p.m. today, April 1, in the Calvary Baptist Church fellowship hall on Lewis Street in Sulphur.
Carlton said Broussard lost his grandfather to cancer and that his grandmother was recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
In addition to a blood drive the community has come together for Broussard in other ways, including holding a garage sale that raised $7,000 and selling T-shirts, with proceeds going to support him and his family. The front of the T-shirts have a design that reads: “We never know how strong we really are until being strong is the only choice. Dylan Strong.”
“The Broussard family are just wonderful people,” Carlton said. “Faith is what holds them together, and it is helping them stay strong in this fight to help Dylan overcome cancer.”
Krista Navarre, spokeswoman for LifeShare Blood Centers, said, “This doesn’t always happen, but I’ve developed an emotional attachment to Dylan because of the way he is facing this huge battle. He has an amazing support system in his life, and that helps him stay strong and gives him the courage to keep going.”
Navarre said she hopes to see a large turnout at the blood drive because “blood cannot be created in a lab — it can only come from a human donor. The need for blood outweighs the supply, and that’s why these blood drives are extremely important.”
T-shirts to support Broussard are available in youth and adult sizes by contacting Carlton at 337-802-5788.
