By far the tallest fixture in downtown Lake Charles, the glass skyscraper known for over a decade as the Capital One Tower is losing its largest tenant and its namesake.
Capital One notified customers in March that its branch at 1 Lakeshore Drive would close permanently on June 23.
Steven Thorpe, spokesman for Capital One, said the Lakeshore branch and a drive-up on 150 West Mill St. would close. “This was a difficult decision and one that our bank leaders did not take lightly,” Thorpe said.
He said it was a “business decision” based on long-term costs, real estate and customer needs at the Lakeshore location. He said more and more customers are engaging digitally instead of at the physical bank.
“Branches are being reshaped throughout the industry to meet customer demand for more simple, convenient and online services,” Thorpe said. “We, too, are adapting our delivery model, balancing digital and in-person options to align with customer behavior.”
Thorpe said customers shouldn’t expect any changes to their accounts or account numbers. “As always, customers can visit any Capital One branch and receive the same level of account access and high-quality service they’ve come to expect,” he said.
He said the company is working hard to make this transition as smooth as possible. “Lake Charles remains important to us, and we’re committed to providing the very best in banking products and services to our customers,” Thorpe said.
Hertz Lake Charles One, the company that owns the building, declined to comment on the tower’s future. The 22-floor, 400,000-square-foot building was built by Calcasieu Marine National Bank for $31 million in the early 1980s. It was known then as the CM Tower.
When Calcasieu Marine merged with Hibernia Bank, the building became the Hibernia Tower. After Capital One Bank acquired it in 2005, the name changed to the Capital One Tower.
Capital One, once a stand-alone credit card company, began acquiring traditional banks about 10 years ago.
