SULPHUR — Central Baton Rouge made the most of Sam Houston’s third-inning errors to beat the Broncos 6-1 Friday to advance to the semifinals in the Class 5A state softball tournament at Frasch Park.
Fourth-seeded Central (25-6) led by a run before extending the advantage with the Broncos’ help in a four-run third inning.
“I think a lot of things in this sport are contagious,” said Sam Houston head coach Beth Domingue whose team committed six errors. “Hitting is contagious, errors are contagious.
“My defense has been very solid all year. I think it was just mental and it got in their heads.”
With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, Broncos first baseman Jordan Lafosse and pitcher Jenny Griggers collided while trying to field a Raegan Willis pop-up, allowing Bailie Johnson to score. Sam Houston dropped three more fly balls or pop-ups that led to three more runs and a 5-0 Central lead.
Fifth-seeded Sam Houston (24-6), which missed last year’s tournament after winning four state championships from 2011 to 2015, had a chance to score in the top of the second inning when Casidy Chaumont got two bases on an error and moved to third on a Lafosse sacrifice bunt. Jayden Dukes reached base. But a base running mishap allowed Central catcher Raegan Willis to turn an unassisted double play to end the threat.
The lone Sam Houston bright spot came in sixth inning when sophomore Jill Poullard hit a one-out solo home run.
Makenah Hamilton and Maddie Pourciaux hit back-to-back two-out singles in the seventh inning, but a pop-out ended the game.
