SULPHUR — Top-seeded Brusly eliminated No. 8 Westlake with a 7-3 win Friday in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A state softball tournament.
Five errors helped do in the Rams.
“Things definitely didn’t go the way we planned,” Westlake head coach Lindsey Langner said. “I am very proud of the girls making it here.
“I think in the end, the errors cost us. I felt like we were in the game with that team. If we had had some clean defense and came up with some of those plays it could have been a different game.”
Westlake was the second area team to struggle on Frasch Park’s Field 15 on Friday. Prior to Westlake taking the field, Sam Houston committed six errors in a 6-1 loss to Central-Baton Rouge.
In the second inning, it was an error by Brusly right fielder Kameryn Adkins on a fly ball by Audrey Fisher that allowed Baleigh Glover to score and put Westlake up 1-0, but that lead didn’t stand long.
In the bottom of the second inning, a Westlake throw to first sailed high allowing Ariana Cipriano to reach base. Cipriano later scored on a double up the middle by Angel Bradford to tie the score. Bradford scored the go-ahead run on a ground out.
Brusly (30-4) added an unearned run in the third and sixth innings sandwiched around a two-run home run by Mary-Cathryn Comeaux and Gabrielle Mancuso’s RBI single in the fourth inning.
Westlake (21-7) made up ground in the top of the fifth when Reagan Richard hit a two-out two-run single, but Westlake left six runners stranded over the final three innings.
Richard and Myka Lester each went 2-for-4 for Westlake, while Kyana Thymes went 2-for-4 for Brusly with a double and a run.
Comeaux pitched a complete game, allowing three runs — two earned — on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Lester took the loss after allowing seven runs — three earned — on six hits with one strikeout and three walks.
