TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — LSU’s Greg Deichmann went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and freshman Zach Hess struck out five in 22⁄3 innings of hitless relief as the Tigers beat Alabama 7-4 Friday night to clinch the Southeastern Conference series.
LSU (29-15, 12-8 SEC) will go for the sweep at 2 p.m. today with right-hander Eric Walker (5-1, 3.49 ERA) on the mound.
Alabama (15-28, 2-18) lost its 12th consecutive conference game.
Jared Poch? (7-3) go the win, allowing all four Tide runs in seven hits in 52⁄3 innings. Hunter Newman came on to get the final two outs.
“Jared Poch? did an outstanding job of giving it his all on every pitch, as he always does, and he got us into the sixth inning,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “Zack Hess was dominant in relief of Jared and turned in another tremendous effort to help us earn the victory. We’re off to a good starrt with two wins in the series, but each game is its own entity, and tomorrow’s game is just as important as the first two have been.”
Deichmann drove in a run with a RBI singles in the third and fourth innings. He also threw out a runner at the plate trying to score on a fly out.
Josh Smith had a two-out, two-run single in the fifth to put the Tigers up 6-3.
Michael Papierski hit a solo home run for the Tigers with two out in the ninth.
Poch?, gave up a pair of home runs, and left the game after giving up a solo shot to Chandler Taylor with two outs in the sixth.
Hess came on to get the final out of the inning on a strike out and allowed one walk before Newman took over.
“For the second straight night, we had a strong start offensively, and I think that’s been a real factor in the two wins,” Mainieri said. “We’ve had a lot of success in games in which we’ve scored first, so it’s important that our guys continue to play with confidence early in the game and build momentum from there.”
