DeRidder area’s lone shining star

SULPHUR — The second-seeded DeRidder Dragons took a 2-1 victory over the seventh-seeded Grant Cougars in the Class 4A quarterfinals to advance to the first semifinal berth in school history.

The Dragons (31-4) advanced to play 11th-seed West Ouachita (15-17) in the semifinals at 11:30 a.m. today.

“I’m excited and really pumped and ready to go for the semifinals as I wish we could play tonight,” said DeRidder coach Todd Schulz. “It’s an exciting time.”

The Dragons got rolling in the bottom of the third inning when Abby Joslin reached base on an error with two outs. She stole second base. Lauren Parson reached base on an error that allowed Abby Joslin to score and give DeRidder a 1-0 lead. A Hadley Allen bunt single scored Parson for a 2-0 lead.

The Cougars answered in the top of the fourth inning. Peyton Roussell opened the inning with a single, followed by a single by Kaylea Gordon. Roussell scored on a throwing error for the final score, 2-1.

The Dragons finished with eight hits led, by Joslin who went 1-for-3 with a single, stolen base, and a run scored. Parson was the winning pitcher as she finished with seven strikeouts and gave up five hits, three by the Cougars’ Madison Wynn.

Grant (24-7) had a runner in scoring position in the seventh inning, but Parson got a strikeout to end the threat and game.

“She (Lauren Parson) has ice running through her veins,” Schulz said. “She stays composed as she knows if we scratch a couple of runs across she is good. We had a rough inning but one run is not going to affect her.”

The Dragons stranded two runners in the fifth and sixth innings.

“I tell the girls we are 31-4 for a reason as we know how to get the job done, and that is what we did tonight,” Schulz said.
