SULPHUR — Ouachita used one big inning to take control of its Class 5A quarterfinal game against Barbe and another to put the game away after a brief Bucs resurgence.
No. 2 Ouachita (31-4) defeated the Bucs 8-6 to advance to the semifinals, where they will face No. 11 Live Oak, which beat No. 3 St. Amant 6-4.
It was the second consecutive year the Lions eliminated the Bucs (22-7) in the quarterfinals.
The Lions scored five runs in the second inning. Abby Allen led off with a solo home run. The Lions then loaded the bases on a bunt single, walk and error. Allie Ellerbe walked in a run, Alyssa Allen hit a fielder’s choice to score one and the Lions added runs on a passed ball and fielder’s choice when Allen scored from third when another runner started a rundown between first and second bases.
Barbe pulled within two with a trio of runs in the fourth. Ally Crooks tripled to score Jennifer Perkins and Emily Hart, then scored after tagging on a foul ball.
Ouachita stretched the lead back to five with a three-run fifth. Abby Allen homered again, Jordyn Manning had an RBI sacrifice fly and Alyssa Allen singled and scored on a throwing error.
Barbe scored again in the sixth when Perkins walked and scored on a Kylie Bergeron single. The Bucs made things interesting late, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Perkins that scored courtesy runner Hannah Brown and Ka’le Guillory. The Bucs had the tying runs on base, but Ouachita got a strikeout to end the game.
“Anytime you play Ouachita, they are very good,” said Barbe head coach Sarah Portie. “Both teams battled. That’s what we ask our girls to do. We didn’t quit and kept fighting and fighting, we just didn’t come out on top. Even when they went up 5-0, not for a second did I think the game was over. Our girls have never quit on a game. We kept pecking away.”
Perkins scored twice and drove in two runs to lead Barbe. Crooks added a pair of hits.
