SULPHUR — Errors haunted the top-seeded Rosepine High School softball team as its season came to an end with a 7-5 Mangham win Saturday afternoon in the Class 2A state semifinals at Frasch Park.
The Eagles (18-8) committed three errors in the third inning that allowed five Dragons to cross the plate, all with two outs, and Rosepine never fully recovered.
“That one big inning they got where they got five runs we could have easily shut down, but we didn’t,” said Rosepine head coach Glenn Granger.
Rosepine cut into the deficit in the fourth inning with a pair of runs on a Kelsey Gill double and a Kailee Bishop sacrifice fly.
But the Dragons (23-9) got those two runs back in the top of the fifth on a two-RBI double by Lauren Nobles.
“That was almost like a dagger in the heart right there,” Granger said. “Had it not been for those two runs, we’d be playing in extra innings.”
That was all the room Mangham pitcher Leann Franks needed to put the Eagles away.
Rosepine scored another run in the bottom of the fifth and cut the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run homer by Haylee Brinlee, a McNeese State commitment.
But the rally was too little too late.
“The girls fought back,” Granger said. “It meant a lot for them to be here. We’re one step closer than we were last year. It means a lot for the team and for the community, and it builds for the future.”
Granger said he really wanted to make it to the state final for his group of seniors, many of whom he said have been starting six year for the Eagles.
Still, he said nobody on his team has any reason to hang their heads after a landmark season for the program.
“I coach a great softball team,” Granger said. “Every one of these girls is like my daughter. I would do anything for them. … It just wasn’t meant to be today.”
