SULPHUR — East Beauregard’s historic season came to an end in the Class 1A semfinals of the state softball tournament when Oak Grove beat the Trojans 8-0 Saturday at Frasch Park.
Oak Grove reached the championship game for the first time with the win. Four of the Tigers’ 10 hits went for extra bases.
The Trojans (16-9) reached the state tournament for the first time. After winning their debut game Friday with a victory over Montgomery, the Trojans couldn’t solve Oak Grove starter Kelsie Travis, who struck out 11 and allowed two hits in six innings of work.
Travis also did damage at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and run scored. Jayden Stephenson led the Tigers attack with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Oak Grove scored four runs over the first three innings then blew the game open with four runs in the sixth.
Travis retired the first 13 Trojan batters before Josey Bailey hit a double off the left-field fence. She didn’t advance any further as Travis got a pop-up and strikeout to end the inning.
Lisa Reeves singled in the sixth and Bailey singled in the seventh, but neither advanced beyond second base.
East Beauregard loses one senior but moves up to Class 2A next season.
Head coach Marsha Cooley said she expects the program to continue improving.
“We had a great season,” she said. “(Reaching the state tournament) was a great accomplishment. Softball has never been here before. We are so proud of our girls for putting in the hard work. They have played together many years. We are going to be ready next year.”
