LaSalle routs S. Cameron

SULPHUR — The fourth-ranked South Cameron Tarpons rallied from a five-run deficit in the quarterfinals, but there would be no rally in the Class 1A semifinals Saturday in the state softball tournament at Frasch Park.

Top-ranked LaSalle (28-6) scored 13 runs in the first inning and went on to win 16-0 in three-innings.

“I guess it just took the life out of us,” South Cameron head coach Kellie McKoin said of Friday’s victory. “It was disappointing but we had a good season.

“They are a great group of kids and they worked hard. They deserved to be here and I am proud of them.”

The loss not only marked the end of the high school careers of seniors Lexi Jo DeBarge, Baleigh Conner and Cadi Manuel, but also for McKoin who is retiring.

“This is my last season,” McKoin said. “I had three great seniors but they are still going to have a pretty good team.

“They are going to be strong again next year with another leader.”

LaSalle almost batted around twice in the opening frame. Senior Carli Prudhomme opened the scoring with a mammoth shot over the left-field fence for a grand slam with no outs. LaSalle also scored four runs on errors and Anna Clark added a two-run single.

Prudhomme finished 2-for-2 with six RBIs after hitting a two-run single in the second inning.

South Cameron (17-7) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second inning, but Cadi Manuel was forced out at the plate and Taylor Snow stuck out DeBarge to get out of the jam. Snow gave up two hits and finished with six strikeouts and three walks.

Connor hit a one-out single in the top of the first inning but was left stranded after Snow stuck out the next two batters.
