WESTLAKE — Sulphur High dominated the Rotary Rams Relays by winning both team titles by a wide margin Friday at Westlake High School.
After losing to Barbe by .4 points last week at the Taussig Relays, Sulphur’s girls team finished with 161 points while Iowa was second with 92.
“We kept everybody in pretty much the same events and really just tried to work on getting personal bests, better times and throwing further,” Sulphur girls track coach Matt Dufresne said. “It just happens to be that we were one of the most dominant teams here tonight.”
Sulphur dominated on boys side by an even wider margin, taking the title with 185 points while the host Rams finished second with 73.
The Lady Tors were led by a pair of juniors, thrower Malasia Sonnier and sprinter Latyana Berry.
Berry set a personal-best mark and became the first in the area this season to break 26 seconds in the 200-meter dash after clocking in at 25.94 seconds. Berry also won the 100 (12.76) and ran the anchor leg in the winning 4x100 (51.01) and 4x200 relays (1:44.97) to win outstanding track honors.
Sonnier won the shot put (35-91⁄2) and discus (91-2) for the second week in a row and tied with Iowa senior Frankie Griffin for outstanding field honors. Griffin won the high jump (5-2) and missed her top mark of the season by a quarter-inch in the long jump but still won with a jump of 17-4.
Westlake led the boys standings after the field events by five points over Sulphur, 48-45, but the Tors took the top two spots in 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200.
Senior McNeese State signee Matthew Griffiths led the Tors by sweeping the distance races (800, 1,600, 3,200) to earn outstanding tack honors. He ran the 3,200 for the first time this season and was neck-and-neck with teammate Hayden Foolkes the entire race but was able to win by .35 seconds with a time of 10:59.01.
“We have been real fortunate over the last few years to have a guy like that,” Sulphur boys track coach Randy Baggett said. “Matt did a great job today.
“His ability to run the 800 all the way up to the 3,200 says a lot about his ability.”
Washington-Marion’s Christian Edwards won outstanding field honors for the second consecutive meet. He easily won the high jump with a height of 6-10 while the rest of the field topped out at 6 feet or less. Edwards also won the long jump (21-71⁄4) by half an inch over Iowa’s Andre Sam and won the triple jump (48-8).
