The Beauregard Parish Police Jury will vote next week on whether to add a layer of security to the checks it issues.
Parish Administrator Bryan McReynolds on Monday recommended the panel begin using Positive Pay, a fraud-detection tool that would compare checks to a set criteria — including amounts and check numbers — to detect discrepancies.
Problems would be reported to the panel immediately.
“It may not stop payment immediately, but it will allow us to be notified so that we can double-check to make sure that the check is legitimate,” McReynolds said. “It marries hand in hand with our move to digital signatures.”
The Police Jury has only experienced one case of check fraud in the past year, but McReynolds said the new layer of safety would be worth it since it comes at no cost. He said other parishes and municipalities use a similar system.
The panel will vote on the motion during Tuesday’s regular session at 6 p.m.
