The Iowa Arts and Crafts Festival will be 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Iowa multipurpose center, 207 U.S. 90 West.
Cornell Thomas, Iowa Library branch manager, said the festival started with an idea to do something that celebrated the arts — and artists — in the area.
“I happen to notice in the area that we had a number of patrons who had talents and gifts and they were just using them for private purposes,” Thomas said.
He said he wanted to have an event where those people could have their moment in the spotlight.
The festival will have displays and live demonstrations, and there will be balloon art, a blacksmith, bands and pony rides, Thomas said.
“We have a wide spectrum of what arts and crafts looks like,” he said.
“It’s important that art always be appreciated and exposed to the community.”
Thomas said people need to have a chance to see the different ways that artists create and display their work.
There will be an outreach library on site for people who are not able to visit the library, along with the Literacy Council.
“We’re hoping to expand into homes for people who can’t come to the library,” Thomas said. “Then we can bring it to them.”
Thomas said library officials are excited about the lineup they have this year.
“We hope everybody will come out and enjoy,” he said.
Light refreshments will be served.
