Jamboree kick off tonight

Southwest Louisiana high school football teams will get their first taste of action under the lights beginning tonight as they host and travel to participate in jamborees.

The exhibitions give teams one last chance to fine tune their lineups and strategies a week before the regular season begins.

“I’m really just hoping to get a good dress rehearsal in,” said Washington-Marion head coach Freddie Harrison. “We want to make sure everybody knows what to do transitioning in and out of special teams and making sure we’re ready to play a full game.”

The Charging Indians will kick off against St. Louis tonight in a game scheduled for 8:30 p.m. in the last game of the night at Sulphur High School.

The jamboree will kick off with a game between East Beauregard and Vinton at 5:30 p.m. and will continue with Sam Houston and Jennings at 7 p.m.

“It’s the last time to get an opportunity to strap up and it not count,” Harrison said. “So you want to make sure that your kids understand, and you want to find those little nicks and nacks that we need to work on.”

St. Louis head coach Charles Cryer said he expects a lot of Saints to see playing time in the game and looks forward to seeing how they react to W-M’s athleticism.

“The kids are excited,” Cryer said. “They’re tired of hitting each other. They’re ready to go. I want to see how some kids handle playing with the lights on. I’ve got a pretty solid group, and I feel pretty confident of who will start. But I want to see some other kids that can play and how they handle themselves in that atmosphere.”

Welsh will also see action at 6 p.m. today as it hosts the Jeff Davis Parish Jamboree. The jamboree will also include Lake Arthur and Elton, and the three teams will play each other for a half in a round-robin format.

“It’s huge because our scrimmage ended up getting canceled,” said Welsh head coach John Richardson. “We have a really young football team, and we haven’t really had a chance to look at them under the lights. This will be the one and only opportunity that we have going into he real season.”

Other area jamborees include the Acadia Parish Jamboree at Iota, which will feature the Bulldogs taking on Rayne, and DeQuincy will travel to Iowa.
