SULPHUR — Sulphur dominated South Beauregard on its home field in the second game of the SPOT Therapy/Billy Navarre Jamboree with an efficient run game and a dominant defense for a 28-7 win Friday night.
Despite having the ball for less than 4 minutes of the 12-minute first half, the Tors tallied 233 yards of offense on the ground while holding the Golden Knights to 31 yards of total offense.
“The offensive line just came out tonight and owned the night,” said Sulphur head coach Jeff Wainwright. “On the last touchdown run it looked like all five linemen had their guys on the ground. Those guys are fun to watch play, and we’ve got some exciting backs.”
J’Cobi Skinner got things started with a 37-yard touchdown in the first drive of the game before Glenn Willis bested him with a 66-yard touchdown in the Tors next drive.
Not to be outdone, Skinner added a 53-yard score to his total, giving the Tors a 21-0 halftime lead.
South Beauregard’s lone score came midway through the second half when quarterback Hayden Gunter found a wide-open Tylin Warden, who finished off a 74-yard touchdown strike to cut Sulphur’s lead to 21-7.
But the Tors quickly responded on the ensuing drive as they went 46 yards on seven plays to again extend their lead to three touchdowns.
Wainwright’s lone complaint was his receiving corps’ trouble catching the ball. Several times quarterback Byron Walker found open receivers who couldn’t hold on to the ball.
“I wish we would have caught the ball a little bit better,” Wainwright said. “We had some open guys and we couldn’t find them. That’s something we’re going to have to really work hard game this week in practice.”
